The hardware might not have changed but the number of packages in Debian increased and as such the memory required to have all package information available has increased as well. How much RAM do you have? Do you have some swap? Can you reduce the number of entries in /etc/apt/sources.list and try to reproduce the problem? If not, try to add swap space. I'm afraid we can't do much against this problem. We already have some patches to reduce memory consumption in dselect (see #395140) and it will be in 1.15.0 but not sure if it helps in your case. If you could compile and try dselect from the git repo, it would be nice however (git clone git://git.debian.org/git/dpkg/dpkg.git).
