For your specific problem, omit the "loop" option in the options=
in <volume>.

I do not think this has anything to do with the keybits option.

I never explicitly used the "loop" option, but even so a loop device (loop1) is mounted on top of my LUKS Partition. That's what surprised me! And thats why i suspect the keybits option. Please see e.g. Message 30 for my mount options ( http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=516003#30 ). But perhaps we're talking at crossed purposes...
