After upgrading moodle to 1.8 (a long story in itself), the user accounts did not work, but the admin account did. I found that by looking at the profile and clicking the "Show Advanced" button that the authentication module was wrong. I set it to manual accounts and saved, and was able to log in with my user account afterwards. It also worked with the other user accounts.
