Digging a little bit deeper this looks like #163 in the rrdtool Trac http://oss.oetiker.ch/rrdtool-trac/ticket/163
According to the svn changelog there are some more fixes in rrd_graph so this could eventually be already fixed. Would be helpfull if someone ;) would package a recent svn snapshot to test it.
