epdfview and pdftotext both fail:

    $ pdftotext rwh.pdf.gz
    Error: May not be a PDF file (continuing anyway)
    Error: PDF file is damaged - attempting to reconstruct xref table...
    Error: Couldn't find trailer dictionary
    Error: Couldn't read xref table

I assume evince handles it in an app-specific fashion because I
requested it, back when I still used evince.
