I suppose it is the not uncommon practice of making source packages as
self-conained as possible, by not requiring people to have those libs
installed.  Indeed, tulip has 3 such 3rd-party libs, one of which is
not packaged in Debian (gzstream).

This also probably helps to ensure the package will build.  Following
my attempt to use the ftgl package, I have learnt that the ftgl API
has been changed in an incompatible way, so tulip will need porting to
the new API so it can make use of the package.  Upstream is aware of
the issue, and a summer trainee will possibly take care of the issue.
