Package: abiword Version: 2.6.8-5 Severity: normal When opening a file you can't read, abiword will silently fail, displaying an empty page instead. No error is given, so I initially assumed the .doc was mangled beyond what abiword could extract bits from. (Yes, I agree, .doc files are a terrible thing.) I later realized I simply hadn't authenticated to AFS, so any read attempts were getting an EPERM. An easier way to reproduce this is to chmod -r a file (the format doesn't seem to matter) and try opening it with abiword.
Oh, right. To make things even more confusing, if you try to open the file through the file open dialog, it won't even show up. Let me know if you need any additional information. Basically, I would expect either an error dialog, or at least an error on stderr to indicate that something went wrong. Since a lot of people probably don't run abiword from the commandline, I imagine an error dialog would be more appropriate.
