I must have missed this the last time, sorry.

It would work as now, with two possible cases:

1) automatic launch by a udev rule 2) hand launch for a
not-yet-recognised device or without udev rules

If the device doesn't have any rule for it, the user will have to
launch it by hand (as actually without my additions in the Debian
package), but if the device is known to usb-modeswitch (by an
appropriate file in the database), the wrapper will be launched
with --non-interactive.

I still like the idea of a "run-once-per-device installer"
better; if I remember correctly, a similar approach is chosen
by the SANE scanner project.

I dislike it, because it transfers the burden of configuration
from upstream/distribution (aka you/me) to the user, where we
could make him an easier life.

But - we're running in circles here - there is no way to prevent the
necessity of user interaction. Easy life or not.

There are some devices that are well known to usb_modeswitch and are
still ambiguous (device meaning vendor + product ID). You can give
them a unique setup in the "database" but that does not helping with
choosing the right configuration automatically.
Either the user has to select the right model once and the right
rule is created for future automatic switching, or the user has to
interact every time the thing is inserted.

I'd be happy if there was a third way but that is yet to be found.

Additionally, there are so many quirks people run into on their specific systems, not the least being entries in "unusual_devs.h" that pop up in some kernel update and suddenly prevent devices from being prepared for switching or using.

So in my opinion the best solution so far would be a tool to help users find their model, test it interactively (if one bulk message doesn't work, try the other) and set up the system properly. If I think about the entries in the USB_ModeSwitch forum, many of the support questions could be handled by a helpful script.

Cheers,
Josh
