Removing either or both of them does not change the situation.
Even removing the ~/.gnome2/session file entirely does not change
anything. I noticed the following processes:

28380 ? Ss 0:00 /usr/lib/bonobo-activation/bonobo-activation-server
--ac-activate --ior-output-fd=20
28382 ? Ss 0:00 gnome-smproxy --sm-client-id default0
28384 ? Ss 0:00 /usr/bin/metacity --sm-client-id=default1
28387 ? S 0:00 /usr/lib/control-center/gnome-settings-daemon
--oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:GNOME_SettingsDaemon --oaf-ior-fd=23

Terminating gnome-settings-daemon and restarting manually with the
same parameters but --oaf-ior-fd=20 results in progress but panel
applets and some other stuff doesn't start up.
