Suddenly it works.
The debian Tomcat4-4.1.31-3 package with java j2sdk1.5.0.
After taking a look at the logs a while ago it gave permission problem
with the $CATELINA_HOME/lib directory. The error was different from the
server error below, but logs have been overwritten.
my /etc/enviroment contains JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/j2sdk1.5-sun.
On my local configuration al least, on my server running kaffe it
gives the same stdout error as before.
Lets investigate the logs.

$CLASSPATH isn't set on my desktop configuration so it must be the kaffe
installation.
kaffe currently cannot run tomcat4 with security manager enabled.
See bug #316580 - I therefore merge the bug reports.
