I think it is related to checksumming, so you could turn that off if
it
is a recurrent and disruptive problem.

I will turn this off now and let you know what happens.

At this point you need to run

 /usr/share/apt-cacher/apt-cacher-cleanup.pl -r

after killing the processes but before restarting to clean locks and
mutexes from the checksum database.

Ok.  Is there somewhere I should rtfm?
