Can you try to reproduce (and eventually confirm) by launching mplayer from the command line? Otherwise you can try to obtain more info by launching gnome-mplayer with the --verbose or --reallyverbose option or by installing the -dbg package and obtaining a backtrace (I suppose when you say it fails to start it is actually crashing).
