Yes, it's a dreadful bug, I apologise for the inconvenience. It has been fixed in the next version 1:2.7.5pre1-4, available in testing, http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/zangband Can you try that version and let us know if it works? I'm not sure if the package dependencies have shifted enough between lenny and squeeze to break an installation from the package in squeeze. But as far as I can see it should be fine.
