I have been using f-spot for quite some times, so my database comes from earlier versions. It seems that most md5_sum fields in my database were not null, just the empty string. And for these the "Hash for Duplicates" did nothing. I had to manually set these fields to null and rehash before f-spot was able to detect duplicates in imported pictures.
