I'm not sure I believe my initial diagnosis now. I attempted a simple recreation of the deletion that seemed to be at the core of the valgrind errors, and I came up blank -- no errors from either valgrind or efence.
On the other hand, I don't think this is just a problem with valgrind, since efence (based on a totally different and much simpler technique) also flags a problem. In short, I'm at a bit of a loss as to what's actually going on. That said, my fix/workaround actually does eliminate the memory errors that I get...I just haven't figured out why yet.
