grub-legacy's update-grub allowed to create more than only one "normal" and one "rescue" menu entry per kernel by virtue of the altoptions setting in /boot/grub/menu.lst. This does not seem to be possible with grub2. This is important, for example for systems which are often booted via the "real" console and then via the serial console.
