Package: etckeeper
Version: 0.40
Severity: minor

Hello,

thank you for etckeeper.

This is what happened:

 1. Uhm, I'd like to put my /etc/ under revision control
 2. Funny, I did put it in git in the past, but not with etckeeper.
    Let's fix that.
 2a. rm -rf /etc/.git
 2b. apt-get install etckeeper
 3. [...]
     create mode 100644 xml/sgml-data.xml.old
     create mode 100644 xml/xml-core.xml
     create mode 100644 xml/xml-core.xml.old
etckeeper: .gitignore does not contain "managed by etckeeper" comment; not
updating
 4. Oh, bollocks. I didn't delete my old .gitignore. Let's try again: I
want to have a nice and pristine etckeeper.
 4a. dpkg --purge etckeeper
     Yes, delete etckeeper's files
 4b. rm /etc/.gitignore
rm: cannot remove `/etc/.gitignore': No such file or directory

Well, I did intend to remove it in the end, but the message ".gitignore
does not contain "managed by etckeeper" comment; not updating" hints
that the existing .gitignore ought not to be touched by etckeeper in any
case, so this sounds like a bug. A minor one I guess, because I can't
think of a case when anyone would like to use etckeeper but manually
manage the .gitignore file.

Ciao,

Enrico
