On current squeeze or sid, I can not confirm your problem. Perhaps, the bug was closed in a newer version of libgcj8-1. Some people using Ubuntu seems to had/have the same problem as you: See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pdftk/+bug/173208
