I've just uploaded a version that disabled ipv6 support again, I hope that fixes all your problems. I wrote a NEWS.Debian, but because of some error on my part it didn't end up in the package telling about the : to % change. So it's back to : now. I've also stopped the init script from eating the message send to stderr, so you should atleast see the error message now. I hope that this fixes all your problems, and that I can close this bug too?
