I have used the avision backend with great success on etch, but it seems it's borked on sid (and probably on lenny). My scanner (Avision AV120) is detected when I plug it in, and it is reported fine with sane-find-scanner, even when I invoke it multiple times : found USB scanner (vendor=0x0638 [AVISION ], product=0x0a27 [AV120]) at libusb:006:014 Now as soon as I invoke "scanimage -L", it just hangs there until timeout, and after that the scanner is not identified by sane-find-scanner anymore: found USB scanner (vendor=0x0638, product=0x0a27) at libusb:006:014 (note that vendor and product are not identified anymore) And I then have these in my log after each sane-find-scanner : usb 6-2: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd sane-find-scann rqt 128 rq 6 len 2 ret -110 usb 6-2: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd sane-find-scann rqt 128 rq 6 len 2 ret -71 Unplugging/replugging or power cycling the scanner makes it possible for sane-find-scanner to identify it again, but scanimage or any other frontend will not work. Now if I move libsane-avision.so.1.0.20, replace it by 1.0.18, everything works fine again.
