Indeed this is a problem.

If you just want to upgrade yourself, the best thing to do is to purge
the xz-lzma package and make sure the old lzma package is reinstalled
(i.e., that /usr/bin/lzma is present in the end). Then xz-utils should
upgrade cleanly.

Ideally, I would like this to happen automatically for anyone who
downloaded packages from collab-maint.alioth.debian.org. xz-utils
should Conflicts: the old xz-lzma package because of the file conflict
you point out, but I worry about the second step. How do we ensure
that xz-lzma, which Replaces: lzma, has not taken over its files and
made them go away? I’ll have to run some tests.

Thanks for pointing this out.

Sincerely,
Jonathan
