Some applications using ALSA -- such aplay and Audacious -- also detect
alternate PCMs using snd_device_name_hint.  (Speaking of which, have you
looked at #549531 yet?)  This makes it possible for an application to
output to other PCMs besides "default".  The problem that Tomasz has
reported is that snd_device_name_hint only shows system-wide PCMs, not
user-defined ones; that is, it shows those which are defined
in /usr/share/alsa/cards/<name>.conf but not in ~/.asoundrc.  For the
