I am having this same problem. I had a similar problem which I reported at http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=532006 . This was resolved by installing gvfs-backends. However, the sites recently disappeared (again) from the folders pane. I have been able to log back in to one site, which is in the form ftp://xx...@homepages.xxxxx.co.uk/. When I try to log on to another site, which is in the form ftp://x12345-x...@www.xxxx.org.uk/ I get the message:
Could not display "ftp://x12345-x...@www.xxxx.org.uk/";.
Nautilus cannot handle "ftp" locations.

I notice that something that appears to have changed, i.e. I have not noticed it before, is that in the Places view when Nautilus is logged on to a site there is an entry with an up arrow which closes the connection when it is clicked.
