I'm not a developer, sorry if this idea sounds absurd, but could this be a problem with video memory ? Because browsing the user's .xsession-error file, I can see many freezes following errors from either gecko (mozilla), kpdf (kde pdf reader) or a line with kernel/qpixmap_x11.cpp, line 750: Out of memory And Mozilla and Kpdf are know to use the X server memory for caching.
