This issue is turning out to be a pretty big deal... it has generated something on the order of 10 bug reports a day for Ubuntu (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/msttcorefonts) since 9.10 was released a week ago. If anyone could help to improve the methods used, it would be greatly appreciated by all the end-users.
