Trying to format a 2.5 inch 160GB HD in
an external enclosure and a 64MB memory
stick in an external card reader, both
connected via USB. This on a the i686/
squeeze platform. Someone has reported
the same problem on amd64/lenny with a
2GB SD card

http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2009/11/msg00478.html

"mkdosfs -c -v -n <label> <device>" hangs
while checking for bad blocks.

The memory stick eventually completed but
the 160GB HD hasn't.

"mke2fs -c -j -L <label> <device>" completes
without a hitch.

Dividing the HD into two partitions of
equal size and running mkdosfs on each
of them completes OK.

Removing the -c option allows the process
to complete OK.

The same thing happens booting a live
grml cd.

ps reports that the process is in
uninterruptible sleep. man ps says that
the cause is liking waiting for IO.

Unplugging and replugging the drive starts
the process running again, though it ends
by reporting an astromical number of bad
blocks.

thanks,
will
