The nice thing is that I was root when I obtained the above output, so
the problem is not only with privileges, but probably with output
format, too.

In fact, it now works.  Thanks for solving this.  I think that the
documentation should mention this problem and provide a pointer to the
tcpping script, or better yet the script itself.
