Well fuse _is_ compatible with 2.6.12 kernel, so I'm not really sure what
causes your problems. 

Tell me what's the output of:

`file /lib/modules/2.6.12-1-686/kernel/fs/fuse/fuse.ko`

And maybe `modprobe -v fuse` too.

I'm not using 2.6.x kernels, but that's probably good time to start ;)
