Yes. Also, you can use a local SMTP server to avoid any suspicion about Gmail adding the message. I've performed a last test with Configuration -> Preferences -> Mail Handling -> Sending -> Save messages to Sent folder NOT checked and the message is still in Gmail mailbox (but not copied anymore to the external MH folder).
