Hi Mark, Sorry for replaying so late. I do not know how to tackle this bug. Yes, maybe comparing x.org-related packages might help. Does it still appear with your machine, now, after updating several X packages? (Is your machine updated to recent unstable? Do you really use unstable, so you have compiled ekiga manually?)
