vzctl set $foo --hostname here.there.example.org I think --hostname needs an FQDN since the argument is also passed to "change_hostname" (defined in scripts/functions) to modify /etc/hosts, and the logic in that function does require a FQDN (so that both "here" and "here.there.example.org" get added as aliases for the host).
