While this explains the behaviour, I think it would be for the best if the exact behaviour, and its lack of compatibility with POSIX, were described in the documentation to make this explicitly clear. Direct equivalents to POSIX basename() and dirname() would be a really nice to have feature (in addition to the existing functions), even if named differently due to compatibility restrictions, but documented to be equivalent.
