This is the first released version of the interface.  The current intention is
to permit backwards-compatible extensions in subsequent upstream releases
without changing the version number.  So old code can use a newer version of
the lib at runtime, but new code should not use an older version than the one
it was compiled against (enforce this with package deps).

If we find ourselves forced to break backwards-compatibility, we'll inc the
version number.
