Hmm, I'm not sure about this. You're right that DefaultChoice is deprecated (sorry for forgetting this)....but in order to have a different default depending on the language, a trick has to be used in "_Default". There is a good example (taken from a package of mine...:)) and complete explanations of the issue in po-debconf(7).
