After sending my reply, I upgraded my box and noticed that a new version of xserver-xorg-core has just migrated from unstable to testing (along with a new version of libc6, among other things). I performed the upgrade, exited from X, restarted everything that was pointed out by checkrestart, started a new X session and retested grace.
