Yeah, I guess you have seen the ugly mistake. You seem to be a good candidate to test the next generation of apt-cacher, available on http://incoming.debian.org in few minutes or in the Debian pool tomorrow. It has been tuned for performance, uses HTTP keep-alive where possible and avoids external command invocations completely. Wanna test it? Run /usr/share/apt-cacher/apt-cacher.pl -h to get an overview of the new command syntax. It should run in CGI compatibility mode as well.
