Otherwise /root/.darcs/author will be > used, which probably doesn't exist. On inspecting 0.43's 50vcs-commit, I see that git uses GIT_COMMITER_*, hg users LOGNAME, and bzr uses --author. But Darcs is encoding $USER in the commit message. This is silly.
