Is this problem perhaps related to bug #547073, which was fixed by patching init in version 2.87dsf-7? On which tty was this problem experienced? Was it present in both tty1 and tty2?
If the problem still exist, I am unsure how we can reliably fix it both for new installations and for existing installations without unwanted side effects. New installations are trivial, while fixing it during upgrades is harder.
