I fixed the problem caused by the bug by changing the group from man to mail for the directory /var/mail.
Should /var/mail be owned by root, and group mail, as in drwxrwsr-x root mail? So my new question is who or what entity set the directory group to man in the first place? Was this done by postfix or the lenny maintainers? All I did was install postfix. I had not even gotten around to configuring it. Now that mutt is working locally, I have something to test with. HTH.
