A fellow developer today pointed out that the original patch indeed
worked as it should, my problem was that I just didn't correctly tested it.

The reason was that file:// spawns another mtn instance and the default
binary which is used for that is "mtn" (defined by the get_mtn_command
hook). This however pointed to an older mtn installation which still had
the issue. Putting the fixed mtn binary in front of PATH or
alternatively overwriting the get_mtn_command hook made it clear that
everything worked as expected.
