Did you notice that you can do the trick using nohup? You don't need it
to block the HUP, but I think that using it has the side effect of
convincing josm that the stdout is still open (and josm appears to be
happy with that).

I really don't think such a bug can be considered important, I'm
lowering it to normal (considering also the fact that an easy workaroung
is available).

I really don't think this behavior is somehow asked by josm itself.
Maybe is a bug/feature of the JRE. I'll do some tries ASAP, in order to
confirm it.
