It's not specific to any desktop environment. In order to pass all keyboard events to guest, kvm grabs input devices (keyboard and mouse), and with them
grabbed xscreensaver does not kick in. This is how things work. You can
make kvm SDL window inactive by switching to some other window, and your
screen saver should work again. Think of it like as if your screen has
been given to your guest, and it's guest's responsibility now to run a
screen saver. Kvm itself does not have any code to deactivate screen
saver, it only grabs input (especially if no -usbdevice tablet specified),
since it's the only way how to pass all keyboard events to a guest.

It's not that simple. I rarely have the virtual machine window selected
but the screensaver still doesn't kick in. Nor does de-selecting the
virtual machine's window restore the screensaver.

Ok, that's now how things work on my side. Maybe it really is
kde-specific. I just tested with lxde (with xscreensaver package) -
the screen saver kicks in (I've set it to trigger after 1 minute)
even if kvm window is active (but not grabbing kbd/mouse). When
I hit (without -usbdevice tablet) the kvm window, it grabs input,
at which point the host screeen saver does not trigger anymore.
Hitting Ctrl+Alt to release the grab makes local screen saver
work again.

I've no kde handy, and no place to install it either.

I understand.

My KDE setup is specific to Debian/Squeeze - I let the KDE4 installer blow away my old KDE setup. But it does go back to the initial KDE4 appearance in Squeeze.

Is there anything you can think of that may cause this? Anything I can check to get further information about it (I can't see anything in syslog or messages indicating a problem)?

This problem is annoying because I don't know how to ensure the KDE screensaver/power saver is active. I believe that KDE doesn't use the xcreensaver - at least not directly. Anyway, there is no specific launcher for it that I'm aware of. Usually adjusting the screen and power saver settings gets it to restart but not always. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries but today it just doesn't want to restart.

One point I forgot to mention is that the screensaver does appear to work while the virtual machine window is selected (after I've restarted it) and the keyboard/mouse are grabbed. I've had to ungrab the keyboard/mouse several times to stop the screensaver when it kicks in. The KDE screensaver doesn't seem to recognize keyboard or mouse activity in the KVM window, so the screen fades to black as I'm working in the KVM window. It's annoying. :)
