Just for the records, I'm doing it. It's gonna be pretty much a rewrite, but I'll keep the original construct and "spirit". I'm fixing a few issues on the go: mostly better error checking, better compliance with RFC, as well as a few bugs.
I'm also trying to make the code more portable (I'm hoping to have it run on BSD, at least for local queries) and I'm making way for eventual IPV6 support. Not saying I'm actually gonna implement any of these tho ;-)
