I had the volume set in ~/.mplayer/config. If I uncomment the line (volume=25) pulseaudio works again. With this information ist should be reproducible by anybody:
mplayer -ao pulse -volume 25 [file]
fails again.

If still needed, I will do so the latest this weekend. What is the best
way to do so? Building vanilla mplayer for both r30059 and r30061 then
verify that only the later doesn't have the problem?
