On the hosts on which pmount-hal works I get:

gq:~# lshal | grep -B1 /dev/sda
gq:~#

r...@big:~# lshal | grep -B1 /dev/sda
r...@big:~#

but on the other two I get:

cmn:~# lshal | grep -B1 /dev/sda
-bash: lshal: command not found
cmn:~#

cmpq:~# lshal | grep -B1 /dev/sda
-bash: lshal: command not found
cmpq:~#

Package hal was not installed on the two failing hosts. I have installed
it and now pmount-hal works on all four hosts. I think the depends list
for pmount needs some tweeking, perhaps.

Now, on host cmn, I get:

cmn:~# lshal | grep -B1 /dev/sda
udi =
'/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_serial_WD_My_Passport_070A_57584E304139394333383730_0_0'
  block.device = '/dev/sda'  (string)
--
udi =
'/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_uuid_3fc4e658_6eec_4b56_9db9_834f1241b9da'
  block.device = '/dev/sda1'  (string)
--
udi =
'/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_uuid_14a22180_8efa_408f_8a0f_afddb46d2fef'
  block.device = '/dev/sda2'  (string)
cmn:~#

The reason I got nothing from lshal on the hosts were hal was already installed
is.
I think, that I just ran the command you suggested, but without plugging in the
USB
drive. I think I have a much better idea of what is going on re. USB now.

Thanks
and
Cheers,
Paul
