Right.

Here's some grepping:

grep "(symbol-name flavor)" /etc/emacs/site-start.d/*.el | cut -f 1 -d
':' | xargs dlocate -S

haml-elisp: /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50haml-elisp.el
mu-cite: /etc/emacs/site-start.d/51mu-cite.el
ecasound-el: /etc/emacs/site-start.d/60ecasound-el.el
wget-el: /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50wget-el.el
slime: /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50slime.el
doxymacs: /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50doxymacs.el
speedbar: /etc/emacs/site-start.d/51speedbar.el
search-ccsb: /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50search-ccsb.el
emacs-jabber: /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50emacs-jabber.el
emms: /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50emms.el
oneliner-el: /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50oneliner-el.el
ruby1.8-elisp: /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50ruby1.8-elisp.el
muse-el: /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50muse-el.el
cedet-common: /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50cedet-common.el
a2ps: /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50a2ps.el
paredit-el: /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50paredit-el.el
eieio: /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50eieio.el

I've used some of these packages without problems. But of course
before starting emacs the packages where installed.

I'm using slime right now with no problems whatsoever. Although it's
unique in the sense that it tests for the symbol binding in the emacs
init file with (boundp 'flavor).

I had similar problems before with org-mode and I submitted a bug
report. In that case the maintainer changed the variable to
debian-emacs-flavor.

Thank you,
António
