Running "xrandr -s 1440x900" works just fine; then, if I log out the
server stays at 1440x900 after the reset.
I think your verbose xorg.conf is problematic here.
Could you do:
mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup
aticonfig -f --initial
