From a quick skim through the source code, in recent gnome-panels the most likely culprit seems to be the clock applet, which uses the system bus to look for location changes from NetworkManager, and set the system clock using some sort of privileged backend. As a result, it opens a shared connection to the system bus, which has the default "exit on disconnect" behaviour. Simon
