$ dch --bpo -D UNRELEASED dch correctly adds the ~bpo50-1 to the current version, leaving the suite to UNRELEASED, a common value while working on a package not meant to be released yet (and so that dch won't add a new changelog entry each time you'll run dch from now on). Ok, now when you're ready to release you'd go with: $ dch -r but in this case, the 'unstable' suite is choosen, and you can't run $ dch -r --bpo I think in this case, the '-r' option, if it detects ~bpoXX in the version string, can automatically choose <stable>-backports as suite to upload.
