My explanation wasn't clear enough obviously: the file attached was NOT an
original mp3 file. It was a convenient way for me to enable you to hear how the
mp3 played in mpg321 on my system. The file I sent was the result of the
original mp3 file played in mpg321 with -w switch and encoded back in mp3 since
the wav file was too big to send by email. I should have also included the
original mp3 file but I didn't feel comfortable with sending a
copyright-protected song on a mailing-list.

Definitely not, what you hear is what I hear when I play the file with mpg321
(the file works fine with other players).
The application I use to create the wav file is mpg321 and lame for the mp3.
The
resulting mp3 corresponds to what I hear.

What about 0.2.10.6?

Yes with all mp3 files.

New information: I have tested it with 0.2.12-1 on my amd64 debian box, there
is
no problem.
It means I have this problem only with the version of mpg321 debian ppc.
Are you sure there was not evolution between audio output between 0.2.10.6 and
0.2.12-1? In the dependencies, I can see that libao2 was formerly used, now it
is libao4. I could therefore be a problem with one of the new dependencies in
0.2.12-1 and not mpg321 directly but I cannot be sure.

I don't know if I can do more tests to help you, please tell me if it is the
case.

Best regards.
